How does a DNA parentage test work?+
A child inherits DNA from their mother and father. Each parent contributes half of the child’s DNA. The child has 23 pairs of chromosomes and for each location, or locus, (plural “loci”) in a chromosome pair there is a specific DNA sequence. DNA parentage testing identifies the specific DNA sequence for multiple loci in the mother, child, and father. If the mother and father are the parents of the child, the two DNA sequences at each locus in the child’s chromosomes will match each parent. By determining these DNA sequences, paternity or other familial relationships can be established.
How long does it take to get the results?+
Most results are ready in 1 to 2 business days from receipt of samples at the laboratory. Delays will happen when samples are not collected properly or when the DNA kit has not been activated.
How will I receive my results?+
Results will be emailed to the address provided when activating your DNA kit. We do not provide results over the phone. If you'd like to receive your results by mail, please contact us at customerservice@dna.direct. Mailing fees maybe applicable.
What is included in a DNA Collection Kit?+
Each DNA Collection kit includes enough material for each individual being testing. Included in each kit are two FDA-Approved sterile buccal swabs per individual, one swab envelope per individual, sample collection instructions, DNA kit activation instructions, and a U.S. domestic USPS prepaid return label.
What are your payment options?+
Payment is made when ordering your test. We accept all major credit cards.
Can my test results be used in court?+
No. For results to be court admissible, a chain of sample custody and proof of identity is required. If you require court admissible test results, please contact us at customerservice@dna.direct.
Are the results confidential?+
Yes. Your results will be held in strictest confidence and made available only to the email address provided when activating the DNA kit.
How long are my results stored?+
Results are stored for a maximum of 12 months from the date of issue.
What if I want to test more than one child or alleged parent?+
Additional family members can be included in any of our tests. Additional charges will apply.
How accurate is the paternity tests?+
Our paternity tests are extremely accurate. In general, if the alleged father shares alleles with the tested child at all tested markers, then the probability of paternity will be at least 99.9%. If the alleged father and the child do not share the same genetic markers, he will be excluded as the father with a 100% probability.
Does the mother have to be tested as well?+
No. However, including the mother is ideal and will provide more conclusive results. If the mother is available for testing, then she should be included. In any event, testing can still be performed without the mother, and in most cases accurate results are still achievable.
